The Popular Healer
by Lorraine M. Dorfman, Ph.D.
There is at least one healer in the community that is extremely popular. He is the one that tells you what you want to hear. People flock to him. They testify that they feel so much better after seeing him.
The question is what you want from your healer. Do you want platitudes or do you want truth? Do you want your appointment to be what the healer needs to feel good about himself or do you want it to be what you need? Do you want to be given a fish to eat for a day or do you want to learn how to fish to feed yourself for a lifetime?
Are you willing to do the work to be able to take care of yourself and promote your well-being?
The root of healer, “heal,” is to become sound again. If you become wounded or broken or stuck, you do not want to return to the state you were in when you broke or lost your way. You want to progress to a better state. You want your broken femur to be stronger than when it was breakable. If you have diabetes, you want to know how to regulate your diet. If you have depression, you want to know how to navigate your way out of darkness and how to move forward from there. You want your healer to assist your progress to that place. You want your life to be in your own hands.
